New Delhi: Newly appointed Chief of the National Commission for Minorities Iqbal Singh Lalpura reached office on Friday and took charge. Lalpura took charge in the presence of Union Minority Affairs Minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi and top officials of the Commission.
Speaking on the occasion, Naqvi expressed hope that Lalpura will take forward the resolve of PM Narendra Modi on empowerment with respect. He further said, "The decisions taken by Modi Ji for the empowerment of all sections of the society are showing its impact. After the formation of the government, a Special Investigation Team (SIT) was constituted to bring justice to the victims of the 1984 riots. Financial assistance of Rs 5 lakh each was provided to the victims. The perpetrators also began to be punished.''
He said the government is going to launch a 'Gurudwara Circuit Train' under which people will be able to visit important religious places. Lalpura said he will do his best to live up to what PM Modi has expressed confidence in him. Lalpura, a former officer of the Indian Police Service (IPS), is the second person from the Sikh community to be appointed chairman after the Minority Commission got statutory power in 1992.
