TEHRAN: Iran's Foreign Minister has stated that the country will pursue diplomacy until a final agreement is reached in the Vienna nuclear talks. The remarks were made during a phone discussion between Hossein Amir-Abdollahian and his Irish colleague Simon Coveney, according to Xinhua news agency, quoting the Iranian Foreign Ministry's website.

Iran has demonstrated, in addition to formulating and offering political initiatives, that it has the requisite will to establish a "good," "strong," and "permanent" agreement in the Vienna negotiations, according to the Iranian top diplomat. "Now it is up to the American side to adjust (former US President) Trump's illegal behaviour by taking serious steps in the direction of (creating) political proposals," he said.

Coveney praised Iran's efforts in the Vienna talks, emphasising the importance of securing a "decent" agreement through the diplomatic process that protects Tehran's as well as the other parties' interests.

In July 2015, Iran signed the nuclear deal with international powers, formally known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), agreeing to impose some restrictions on its nuclear programme in exchange for the lifting of US-led sanctions. In May 2018, however, Trump withdrew the US from the agreement and reimposed sanctions on Iran, causing Tehran to back out of several of the JCPOA's nuclear commitments in retribution.

Eight rounds of discussions between Iran and the other JCPOA signatories, including China, the United Kingdom, France, Russia, and Germany, have been held in the Austrian city of Vienna since April 2021 in order to revive the accord. As a result of its withdrawal from the agreement, the United States has been indirectly involved in the negotiations.
