Iran's foreign ministry spokesperson said on Monday that the country is ready to restore its embassy in Saudi Arabia. Saeed Khatibzadeh, speaking at a weekly news conference, said the choice is still up to Saudi Arabia and the practical actions it takes.
Iran is currently working on the resumption of activities by its delegation to the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) in Jeddah, according to Khatibzadeh. In an interview with Al Jazeera English, Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian stated that Iran had held four rounds of friendly and constructive talks with Saudi officials in Iraq.
"The official position of the United States is that relations between the two countries will resume normal whenever the Saudi side desires. Iran is prepared for the reopening of embassies and consulates and looks forward to it "Abdollahian expressed his thoughts.
In early 2016, Saudi Arabia severed diplomatic ties with Iran in response to attacks on Saudi diplomatic missions in Iran following the death of a Shiite cleric by Saudi Arabia.
