TEHRAN: The Supreme Leader of Iran,  Ayatollah Ali Khamenei banned importing American Pfizer-BioNTech and Britain's AstraZeneca coronavirus on Friday. The banning of the vaccine was announced in a televised speech, he said the import of American and British vaccines was “forbidden". This decision of banning is a reflection of mistrust toward the West. Khamenei said of those nations,” I really do not trust them. Sometimes they want to test their vaccines on other countries, adding, “I am not optimistic France,” either. However, the country began testing its vaccines on humans in December.

The product is expected to hit the local market in spring. President Donald Trump finally bent to reality with 13 days left in his course, on Thursday. He pointed out a video from the White House by criticizing the violence going on in his name a day earlier at the Capitol. The hardliner Khamenei and the government in Iran have long opposed the US-made vaccines and in December Iran's Revolutionary Guard rejected the use of foreign-made vaccines altogether. Gen. Mohammad Reza Naghdi says the Guard “does not recommend the injection of any foreign vaccine.” Authorities then say that US-based patrons plan to deploy scores of thousands of Pfizer-BioNTech coronavirus to Iran.

President Rouhani has previously expressed openness to working with the new US president once. Iran retains routes to vaccines despite sanctions, including through its participation in COVAX.
