BAGHDAD: The Twenty-fifth Arabian Gulf Cup 2023 kicked off in the southern Iraqi city of Basra.

The commencement of the Gulf championship was announced on Friday at the opening ceremony by Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia' al-Sudani, who noted that the event symbolises "fraternity between the Gulf Arab brothers."
After the opening ceremony, the first game between Iraq and Oman finished in a scoreless tie. The national soccer teams of Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates are in the second group, while Yemen, Saudi Arabia, and Oman are in Group A with the Iraqi team.

The event, which was held in Qatar for its 24th time in 2019, was put on hold afterward owing to the COVID-19 epidemic.

The 1970-founded competition made its first trip back to Iraq in 1979, when the country's capital Baghdad played home to its fifth edition.

Iraq expects that the current Gulf Cup would provide a platform to demonstrate the nation's return to regional activities.
Gianni Infantino, the president of FIFA, Mohammed al-Halbousi, the speaker of the Iraqi parliament, and the executives of the football associations in the Gulf states attended the event.
