Baghdad: A massive fire broke out at al-Hussein Covid Hospital in Iraq's southern city of Syria on Monday. 44 people including 2 health workers lost their lives and 67 others were injured in the accident. The fire has been controlled. A preliminary investigation revealed that the fire was triggered by a blast in an oxygen tank in the Covid ward.

PM Mustafa al-Qadimi has convened a meeting of senior ministers following the incident. It ordered suspension and arrest of the security managers of The Nassyria Hospital. During the accident, health workers fished out the burning bodies from Covid Hospital. Many of the patients evacuated during this period were coughing badly due to smoke. An inquiry has been initiated into the accident. The cause of the fire is being ascertained. However, the death toll may rise as many people are said to be missing.

Earlier in April, a fire broke out at Covid Hospital in Baghdad in which 82 people lost their lives while 110 others were injured. Iraq's health department, which has already been destroyed by war and sanctions, is already facing problems to deal with the Coronavirus. More than 14.38 lakh people have been infected with the epidemic so far, while 17,592 people have lost their lives.
