Baghdad—In response to recent US airstrikes on militia positions in Iraq and Syria, a spokesperson for the Iraqi armed forces condemned the attacks, labeling them as a violation of Iraq's sovereignty. The strikes occurred amid Iraq's efforts to maintain regional stability, according to reports from the Iraqi News Agency (INA).

The spokesperson emphasized that the airstrikes undermine Iraq's government efforts and could lead to severe consequences for security and stability in both Iraq and the wider region.

Syrian state media also criticized the US for what they termed "aggression," citing attacks on desert areas near the Syrian-Iraqi border, resulting in casualties.

Last week, The Islamic Resistance in Iraq, a coalition including militias such as Kata'ib Hezbollah and Harakat al-Nujaba, claimed responsibility for a drone strike in Jordan that killed three US military personnel and injured others.

US President Joe Biden responded to the incident, stating that while the US does not seek conflict in the Middle East, it will retaliate against any harm to American citizens. He referenced the recent drone attack in Jordan and subsequent airstrikes in Iraq and Syria as part of this response.

The US aims to avoid conflict with Iran and the wider Middle East. However, President Biden emphasizes that we will protect our citizens and hold accountable those who cause them harm, choosing when and where to act. This began tonight, but our response won't conclude tonight.

Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin indicated a readiness for further action, asserting the US's capability to respond effectively to threats posed by Iranian-backed militias.

The recent airstrikes come in the wake of heightened tensions following the deadly drone attack on a US military outpost in Jordan, underscoring the ongoing challenges faced by regional actors.
