Iraqi soldiers thwarted a drone strike on an air base outside Baghdad on Saturday, according to the military.

The drones neared the southern border of the Balad Air Base, 90 miles north of Baghdad, forcing Iraqi soldiers to open fire, according to the Iraqi Joint Operation Command's media office in a statement.

Balad Air Base has F-16 fighter planes as well as a technical staff from a US corporation. The new strike is the latest in a string of recent drone and rocket attacks against Iraqi army bases and the Green Zone.
