BAGHDAD:  The Iraqi parliament has enacted a bill that allows the government to utilise public funds to satisfy emergency food, public-service, and development requirements. The bill was passed by the parliament of Iraq on Wednesday, June 8.

The Bill also aims to grant the government the right to allocate 25 trillion Iraqi dinars (USD17.14 billion), enabling the government to "achieve food security and alleviate poverty,"  according to a statement released by parliament on Wednesday."The measure also intends to provide job opportunities, maximise Iraqis' benefit from state resources, boost the country's development, resume work on halted and lagging projects owing to a lack of finance, and start new important projects," the statement read.

Iraq is in a political stalemate after elections eight months ago failed to deliver a new President or Prime Minister, forcing the interim government to operate without a budget.

The bill will come into effect immediately and will remain in effect until the approval of a national budget.
