BAGHDAD: The Iraqi Parliament has resolved to conduct a meeting on Thursday to pick the nation's new president.
According to news re[ports, the decision was made on Tuesday by Parliament Speaker Mohammed al-Halbousi. He made the announcement in a press statement following a routine session and noted that the sole item on the agenda for Thursday's session will be the election of the President.

The presidency should be reserved for the Kurds, the Speaker's position for the Sunnis, and the Prime Minister's position for the Shias, according to the power-sharing arrangement in Iraq after 2003.
The President's position continues to be a point of contention between the two main Kurdish parties, the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan and the Kurdistan Democratic Party.

In an effort to break the political impasse a year after the October 10 elections last year, Muhsen al-Mandalawi, first deputy of the parliament speaker, stated in a statement on Monday that approximately 170 lawmakers had requested to hold a session on Wednesday specifically for electing the country's next president.

The greatest winner in the October 2021 parliamentary elections, Shia cleric Moqtada al-Sadr and the Sadrist Movement, and his competitors in the Shia parliamentary parties in the Coordination Framework have been at odds for several months (CF).

Al-Sadr has recently called for the dissolution of Parliament and the holding of early elections, but the CF parties, which have grown to be the largest bloc since al-Sadr ordered his supporters to leave the legislature in June, have rejected his demands.

The establishment of a new administration, which is required by the Iraqi constitution to have a two-thirds majority of the 329-seat Parliament, has been hindered during the past few months by ongoing conflicts between the Shia parties.
