New Delhi: Dr. Jitendra Singh, Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science and Technology, stated that ISRO has the necessary technologies and expertise to provide information on cyclone advance warning, coastline monitoring, and coral reef monitoring using space-based inputs to assist small island states in protecting themselves from inundation due to rising temperatures.

In a written response to a question in the Lok Sabha today, the Minister stated that ISRO is preparing to offer such information to several of the Indian Ocean Region's Small Island Developing States (SIDS). During the United Nations' 26th Conference of Parties in Glasgow, UK, India, the United Kingdom, Australia, Fiji, Jamaica, and Mauritius jointly launched the Infrastructure for Resilient Island States (IRIS) initiative to provide technical support on disaster resilience of infrastructure systems to SIDS, he said.

IRIS, according to the Minister, will also assist SIDS by facilitating access to current finance instruments for the building of resilient infrastructure. IRIS will provide help to 58 Small Island Developing States (SIDS) from various geographic regions on a demand basis.
