Is coconut oil good or bad???

Coconut is one of those foods that seems to juggling between the 'good food' and 'bad food' list, and if you're confused about this, don't worry, even the experts can't quite agree.

Much can be said about the pleasures of coconut. Certainly, the cuisines of many countries, from India to Indonesia, would be much the poorer without it. But would they be healthier.

Some who profit from coconut oil claim it has miraculous powers, curing everything from cancer to jock itch. The boldest claim may be that it is a potential cure for Alzheimer’s. There is no scientific evidence that coconut oil helps with Alzheimer’s. The coconut oil promise has been around for more than three years. If the administration of coconut oil was, indeed, beneficial, it would presumably be shouted from every mountaintop.

Coconut oil may be better for overall health than some types of fat, for example trans fats and possibly some animal fats, due to its unusual combination of fatty acids. However, there is no evidence that coconut oil is any more beneficial to health than oils containing mainly unsaturated fats such as canola, soya and olive oils. Coconut oil is one of the rare plant sources of saturated fat. Primarily found in animal-derived foods, saturated fat tends to increase LDL (bad cholesterol), the leading risk factor heart disease.

It is recommended that saturated fat makes up 10% of less of your total calorie intake, so very small amounts of coconut oil in the diet in place of other saturated fats will probably do no harm, however it is important to note that there is not definitive evidence to say it is a healthier option than other fats.
