In response to escalating student protests demanding the restoration of peace in Manipur, prohibitory orders were imposed in three districts of the state. The protests, which took place in the Imphal Valley, highlighted the growing unrest in the region as residents called for an end to the violence that has plagued the area for months.
Authorities clamped down on the protests by enforcing an indefinite curfew in Imphal East and Imphal West districts. The curfew, which prevents residents from leaving their homes, was implemented to maintain public order and avoid further clashes. Alongside this, prohibitory orders under Section 163(2) of the BNSS were imposed in Thoubal district, restricting gatherings and movement in the area.
The protests, primarily led by students, reflect the increasing frustration within the community as they demand immediate action to restore peace in the strife-torn state. Manipur has witnessed ongoing tensions between ethnic communities, and the situation remains volatile.
While the government has taken steps to contain the situation by imposing curfews and restricting public movements, the residents' demands for a political resolution to the conflict grow louder. Many are calling for a peaceful dialogue between conflicting groups to end the violence and bring stability back to the region.
As the curfew remains in place and prohibitory orders continue, the authorities are urging citizens to remain indoors and cooperate with law enforcement to avoid further escalation of tensions.
This unrest comes after more than 15 months of ongoing tensions between the Kukis and Meiteis, fueled by the Kukis’ demand for a separate administration and allegations of a partisan state government. Despite Chief Minister N Biren Singh’s assurances to restore peace within six months, the conflict continues.
The situation in Manipur has prompted calls for a political solution, with many pointing to the need for action from the central government. Some have also questioned the suitability of CM Singh to remain in office, highlighting the need for a more inclusive and transparent approach.
Recent demands by Singh, including handing over law and order control to the state government and revoking the Suspension of Operations Agreement with certain militant groups, have raised concerns. Critics argue that these moves could further escalate tensions, and emphasize that any solution perceived as biased by either side is unlikely to succeed. The role of civil society in bridging ethnic divides has been highlighted as crucial in reversing social polarization and leading a peaceful discourse.
Observers have noted that the situation in Manipur has reached a critical point. There are growing calls for transparent political action, including the possibility of granting the Kukis an autonomous administrative region. The ongoing unrest has deepened the divide between the communities, with little effort to address the root political causes of the conflict. Many believe that a more democratic and non-partisan approach could have put the state back on the path to peace.
The violence, which has spread across almost the entire state, is being fueled by a lack of trust between the communities and the administration. There is a clear need for a political process that listens to the concerns of all sides and offers a transparent process of accountability and justice for all victims. Experts argue that the current approach of force and political maneuvering is unlikely to bring lasting peace.
Both the central and state governments have faced criticism for their handling of the situation, with some calling it a poor reflection of governance. The drift in leadership, combined with a lack of a coherent strategy, has allowed the situation to worsen. While efforts have been made by some leaders, they have so far been insufficient to calm the escalating conflict.
