Kochi: The sixth season of the Indian Super League football tournament has begun. Two goals from Nigeria striker Bartholomew Ogbeche in the first match of the league saw Kerala Blasters defeat Atlético de Kolkata 2–1. Karl McHuse scored the 100th goal of ATK in the ISL in the sixth minute. However, the local team blasters made a strong comeback in the presence of more than 35 thousand spectators. The team equalized with Ogbeche's goal on a penalty in the 30th minute and then a 2–1 lead in the 45th minute from the striker's second goal which proved to be the deciding score.
Ogbeche, who was the second most successful goal scorer captaining Northeast United FC in the fifth season, proved his usefulness in the first match for his new team and earned him a full three points. Last season too, Kerala Blasters defeated ATK 2–0 in the first match. The match started with a bang. The visiting team scored the first goal, surprising the audience. The first goal of the match, however, was scored by two-time champion ATK in the sixth minute. It took the hosts 24 minutes for Kerala to land this goal.
ATK's Jayesh Rane in the 15th minute and Jaero Rodriguez of the Blasters got a yellow card in the 19th minute. ATK's Roy Krishna was very close to giving his team a 2–0 lead in the 24th minute but luck did not support him and he even managed to hit the ball out of the one-2-one position with the goalkeeper.
