ISLRTC signs MoU with NCERT to convert its textbooks into Indian Sign Languages

Indian Sign Language Research and Training Centre-ISLRTC (a National Institute of Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities, Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment) and NCERT (a National Institute of Ministry of Education) have inked an MoU to prepare education materials accessible for hearing impaired children. The books will be made in the hearing impaired children preferred format of communication of Indian sign language, said the ministry.

“It is a historic decision for people with difficulties in speaking or hearing and will empower differently-abled persons", said Thawar Chand Gehlot, Union Minister of Social Justice and Empowerment. He added “On NCERT’s 60th foundation day ceremony, we’re extremely happy to announce the signing of this MOU which will empower the specially-abled children of this country. The conversion of all education matter in sign language will strengthen the concept of equal opportunity for everyone irrespective of their physical inability”.

The Memorandum of Understanding was signed between Shakuntala Doley Gamlin, Secretary, DEPwD and Anita Karwal, Secretary (School Education & Literacy), Ministry of Education. Dr. Prabodh Seth, Joint Secretary, Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (DEPwD) and Director, ISLRTC, and Prof Hrushikesh Senapathy, Director, NCERT signed the MoU from the respective institutes on Tuesday. Dr. Pokhriyal congratulated NCERT on the MoU saying it ensures educational standardization of Indian sign language as mandated in the New Education Policy (NEP) 2020. He praised the department for its appreciable works for the welfare and uplifting of Divyangjan in the country. The MoU will empower the hearing impaired children in the country.
