JERUSALEM – Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett has warned that the current coronavirus outbreak, which is mostly caused by the extremely infectious Omicron variant, will infect 2 million to 4 million Israelis.
"Information presented during a cabinet meeting shows that 2-4 million Israeli residents would be infected in the current wave," Bennett said on his Facebook page on Sunday, according to the Xinhua reports.
Bennett responded to widespread public criticism of the government's intricate and frequently changing limitations by explaining that Omicron is "contiguous to an extent we didn't know," and that the restrictions had been changed frequently to keep up with Omicron's rapid spread. Bennett has spearheaded a policy that focuses on keeping the economy open while promoting vaccinations aggressively.
According to the latest numbers released by the country's health ministry, the total number of Covid-19 cases in Israel, which has a population of 9.45 million, topped 1.5 million on Sunday.
