Jerusalem: To protect against anti-tank missiles, Israel has begun construction of a concrete wall along the highway bordering the Gaza Strip.

According to the nation's Defense Ministry, the 4.6 kilometer long wall encircling the Gaza Strip was constructed to protect Israeli cities from attacks.

The Security Corridor project in the Gaza Strip, which aims to allow the movement of residents in times of emergency without fear of attack, was also mentioned as having begun construction.

After Palestinian factions carried out an operation in 2019 using a guided Kornet missile that targeted an Israeli military vehicle, Israel first constructed a concrete wall along an exposed section of the security fence in the northern Gaza Strip.

A smart integrated concrete wall was built along the train tracks for about 100 million shekels ($27.8 million) to protect trains from Palestinian militants.

The tunnels have also been used by Palestinian fighters to enter Israeli-controlled territory, most notably during the more than 50-day conflict in 2014.

During various escalation phases, anti-tank missiles have also been launched at Israeli vehicles.

The Israeli government led by Benjamin Netanyahu constructed a new line of defense along the borders of the Gaza Strip in June 2016 to thwart an offensive tunnel system built by Palestinian fighters.

Israel built a third defensive security system along its border with Gaza.

In 2017, an underground wall cost $1.2 billion to build and required the labor of over 1,200 people.

Several control towers, as well as hundreds of cameras, surveillance and alarm systems, are part of the concrete wall above ground.

Additionally, the wall reaches several kilometers into the sea, and is manned by operations that mimic offensive and infiltration maneuvers.

According to a source close to Hamas' military wing, who declined to be identified, Israel lost money by spending so much on security walls.

He said, "What the enemy fears will happen." The Palestinian resistance has done this successfully before, but its strategy and goals are ones it defines consciously and after careful consideration.

The ability to surprise the enemy with high-quality operations in unexpected ways is an ability that the resistance in Gaza possesses at all times.

"This concrete wall will not prevent the resistance from reacting to Israeli crimes and aggression."

Israel has not entered the territory by land since 2014 and in recent years has relied on aerial bombardments for its military operations against the Gaza Strip.

Since Hamas seized power in the region in mid-2007, the Gaza Strip has experienced four wars and several periods of tension.

Ayman al-Rafati, a political writer affiliated with Hamas, claimed that Israel builds walls to give its citizens a sense of security.

Al-Rafati told Arab News that the Palestinian resistance "follows Israel's footsteps and studies how to overcome the obstacles created by the occupation."

"The Resistance is seeking new objectives, and this wall will not change how a military conflict plays out.
