Dubai: According to the Iranian semi-official Mehr news agency, an Israeli air strike near the capital of Syria resulted in the death of a military adviser to the Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps.

In Syria, where Tehran's influence has increased since it started backing President Bashar Assad in the civil war that broke out in 2011, Israel has been conducting attacks against what it has referred to as Iran-linked targets for years.

Iran claims that at Damascus' invitation, its officers work as advisors in Syria. Numerous Revolutionary Guards soldiers, including senior officers, have died in Syria as a result of the conflict.

Meqdad Meqdani was injured in the Zionist attack on Friday morning and later died as a martyr, according to Mehr news. According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, Friday's airstrike—sixth Israel's in March also killed Milad Haydari, a military advisor and officer for the Revolutionary Guards. On Friday, the Revolutionary Guards vowed to retaliate against the Israeli assault.

Early on Sunday, Israeli airstrikes struck a number of locations in the Homs province of Syria, injuring five soldiers, according to Syrian state media. Israel has now targeted Syrian targets nine times since the year's beginning, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a war monitor affiliated with the opposition.

According to military sources cited by the state news agency SANA, the attacks hit locations in the Homs city and its surroundings. According to the report, Syrian air defenses intercepted the missiles and destroyed some of them. According to the observatory, the missiles hit a research facility as well as Syrian military installations and militias with ties to Iran.

Israel did not immediately issue a statement regarding the strikes. In recent years, Israel has attacked numerous targets inside the government-controlled areas of Syria, including the airports in Aleppo and Damascus, but it rarely publicly acknowledges any particular attacks.

Israel claims to attack the bases of militant organizations with ties to Iran, including Lebanon's Hezbollah, which has dispatched thousands of soldiers to aid Syrian President Bashar Assad's forces.

Milad Heidari, a military advisor for Iran, was reportedly killed by Israel in what Iran's state television referred to as a "criminal strike" on Friday.

Last month, an Israeli airstrike on Aleppo's airport caused it to be out of service for two days. Since the deadly 7.8-magnitude earthquake that struck Syria and Turkey on February 6, the airport has served as a major route for aid shipments.

In an apparent effort to stop Iranian arms shipments to militant groups supported by Tehran, such as Hezbollah, Israel has also attacked seaports in government-held areas of Syria.
