JERUSALEM: The military court of Israel rejected an appeal to release a Palestinian prisoner whose health has been deteriorating amid his 165-day hunger strike in protest at his detention without trial or charge.

As per Xinhua report, quoting Israel's Ha'aretz daily, Justice Eyal Yinon determined that despite Khalil Awawdeh's deteriorating health, "the risk he poses still doesn't allow his release".

The court can only hope that Awawdeh will terminate his hunger strike after the judge said that his ability to recover his health "rests on his own hands."

Awawdeh's attorney, Ahlam Haddad, acknowledged the appeal was turned down and said that the decision "poses a danger to her client's life," adding that she planned to file a petition with the Supreme Court to try and have him released.

Last Wednesday, Awawdeh's health deteriorated to the point where he needed to be sent to the hospital. Khalil Awawdeh disputes Israel's assertion that he is an active member of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad.

When Israel and Egypt reached a cease-fire agreement earlier in August, ending the three days of deadly combat in the Gaza Strip, the Islamic Jihad requested his release. He was not acknowledged as a member of the group.

Israel has held thousands of Palestinians in administrative detention for protracted lengths of time throughout the years without putting them on trial, notifying them of the accusations against them, or allowing them or their attorneys to see the evidence.

Palestinian inmates have persistently turned to indefinite hunger strikes as a form of protest against their unlawful administrative imprisonment and to demand an end to this lawless practise.
