Israel: The Israeli parliament has approved a bill that would limit a Prime Minister's tenure to no more than eight years. According to sources, lawmakers voted 66-48 in favour of the bill. The vote was the first of three full rounds of votes required for the bill to become law.

Following a ministerial committee's approval of the law last week, Prime Minister Naftali Bennett's cabinet chose to support it in a telephone vote on Sunday night.

The bill is largely interpreted as a response to former Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's ouster by the current ruling coalition after 12 years in power.

Netanyahu was Israel's Prime Minister for 15 years, making him the country's longest-serving leader. The bill will not be retroactive, so it would not harm opposition leader Binyamin Netanyahu if he seeks re-election. The bill is largely interpreted as a response to former Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's ouster by the current ruling coalition after 12 years in power.
