JERUSALEM: Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett paid his first official visit to the United Arab Emirates in an effort to enhance the two countries' recently established ties.
Bennett said in a video statement at the Ben Gurion Airport outside Tel Aviv on Sunday, "I am happy to take off for a historic visit, the first of its type, to the UAE." Bennett also stated that he will meet with Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, on Monday "a slew of other ministries and high-ranking officials. " The visit, which comes 14 months after Israel and the UAE normalised relations, is "designed to deepen the nations' collaboration in all areas," according to Israeli PM Bennet said.
He went on to say that the relationships are "great and branching," and that "we must continue to cultivate and strengthen them, as well as foster the warm harmony between the two peoples." According to reports, the visit coincides with Israeli diplomatic efforts to disrupt nuclear talks between world powers and Iran. The trip also marks the first formal visit to the Gulf country by an Israeli Prime Minister.
In September 2020, Israel and the United Arab Emirates signed the so-called Abraham Accord, a normalisation pact negotiated by the United States.
