Jerusalem: Late Sunday, Israeli police spread out in a violent east Jerusalem neighbourhood, attempting to quell clashes between ultranationalist Jewish demonstrators and local Palestinians. The violence occurred in Sheikh Jarrah, a hotspot neighbourhood where confrontations last year sparked an 11-day Gaza Strip war between Israel and Hamas terrorists.

Hundreds of Palestinian families are under risk of being evicted by Jewish settler organisations in Sheikh Jarrah and other east Jerusalem neighbourhoods, and tensions between the two sides frequently escalate into violence.

The latest unrest erupted over the weekend after a settler's home was set on fire. An ultranationalist politician, Itamar Ben-Gvir, responded to the fire by erecting a makeshift office near the house of a family facing eviction early Sunday. Palestinians surrounded Ben-tent Gvir's in the afternoon, throwing plastic chairs and scuffling with his supporters.

To disperse Palestinian protestors, riot police sprayed foul-smelling water late Sunday. An Israeli police officer was seen kicking a young Palestinian man in a video posted on social media. At least 12 arrests were reported by the police. According to the Palestinian Red Crescent, 14 Palestinians were injured, including four civilians who were shot with rubber bullets. Throughout the evening, the sound of stun grenades being deployed by police to clear people could be heard.
