Jawed Habib, a celebrity hairstylist and BJP leader, has sparked outrage after spitting on a woman's hair in a video that has gone viral on social media. Jawed Habib is seen in the video using his spit to style a woman's hair at a workshop in Muzzaffarnagar, Uttar Pradesh. "Pani na ho to ye karein (if there is no water, do this)," Habib is said to have said in the video as he spat on the woman's hair. Muzzaffarnagar police have launched an inquiry into the incident.

"The case is being examined by the local police, and appropriate action would be taken," Muzzaffarnagar (city) SP Arpit Vijayvargiya said.

Jawed Habib has been charged with assault and insult under sections 355 and 504 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), as well as relevant sections of the Epidemic Act. Meanwhile, Jawed Habib has apologised for his actions in a video.

"I simply want to say one thing," he added. These are expert-led workshops. They're attended by folks who work in our field. We attempt to make these sessions humorous when they go too lengthy. If you have been harmed, please accept my heartfelt apologies." The National Commission for Women (NCW) has taken notice of the situation and has requested that the Uttar Pradesh police investigate the video's veracity.

"This incident has been taken very seriously by the commission... requests your immediate assistance in this case... In the wake of the Covid pandemic, the union home ministry issued instructions under the Disaster Management Act, 2005, making spitting in public a serious offence," the NCW noted in a letter to the Uttar Pradesh police.
