Team head of Jaguar, James Barclay planned Formula E round in Hyderabad next year would be a dream come true for Tata-owned Jaguar and would further grow the sport in India.

The all-electric championship signed a statement of intent with the state of Telangana for a race in the city's south-eastern region this week. Since the last Formula One race in 2013, India has not hosted a global championship racing event.

However, the sport has stated that more than 20 towns have expressed interest in hosting a round in season nine, when the new generation of cars will be introduced. "We're very excited about Hyderabad," Barclay said in a video conference ahead of season eight, which kicks off on January 28-29 with a pair of night races in Saudi Arabia.

"India is a strategically significant market for us, as well as a market with a large following." "We've wanted to have a race there for a long time, and it's just unlocking the formula to make a race viable, with the appropriate promoter to fund, put in place, and execute it effectively."

Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) is the Formula E team's title sponsor. Jaguar is owned by Tata Motors of India. Mahindra, an Indian manufacturer, is also competing in the championship.
