NEW DELHI: The Jal Jeevan Mission has reached a key milestone, with 50% of rural households now having access to tap water, according to a Ministry of Jal Shakti official.

Goa, Telangana, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, D&N Haveli and Daman & Diu, Puducherry, and Haryana are among the states that have already attained 100% household connectivity. According to the official, the states of Punjab, Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh, and Bihar have coverage of more than 90% and are rapidly approaching the condition of 'Har Ghar Jal.'

Jal Jeevan Mission strives to empower Panchayati Raj Institutions and communities by involving them in water supply plans from the start, in order to achieve Mahatma Gandhi's objective of 'Gram Swarajya.' "Water is provided to over 9.59 crore rural households in states and UTs across the country. The century-old torture of trekking lengthy distances in scorching heat, rain, and winter in quest of water is now over for the women and girls in these homes "he said.

The Union Government's flagship 'Har Ghar Jal' programme, undertaken by the Jal Jeevan Mission under the Ministry of Jal Shakti in collaboration with states and UTs, aims to provide tap water to every rural family by 2024.

Only 3.23 crore families, or 17% of the rural population, had access to drinking water through taps when the Jal Jeevan Mission was launched in 2019. On May 27, 108 districts, 1,222 blocks, 71,667 gramme panchayats, and 1,51,171 villages were designated as 'Har Ghar Jals,' with all rural homes receiving drinking water from taps.
