New Delhi: Shri Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, Union Minister for Jal Shakti, reviewed the 564 MLD Okhla Sewerage Treatment Plant, which is being built under the Yamuna Action Plan-III, for which the national government is providing financing. The Union Minister initially went to ITO's Chhat Ghat and then took a boat to Okhla Boat Club, which is 12 kilometres distant. Shri Shekhawat then travelled by car to the Okhla STP location.

Due to the current scenario in Delhi, Shri Gajendra Singh Shekhawat stated that the STP work in Delhi has been directed to be expedited in order to meet the December 2022 deadline. He went on to say that beyond December 2022, there will undoubtedly be a shift in the quality of water in Delhi's River Yamuna. The Okhla STP is Asia's largest sewage treatment plant. The water quality of the River Yamuna will significantly improve with the completion of this 564 MLD. As part of the integrated project, sludge management has been included in the scope of work, ensuring that the sludge is appropriately disposed of in a scientific manner while also addressing environmental concerns.

NMCG has taken on a total of 11 projects in Delhi under the Namami Gange initiative to treat 1268 MLD sewage at a cost of Rs. 2009 crore in order to safeguard River Yamuna. The Central Government is funding the majority of these projects under the Namami Gange Programme. In the catchment areas of Coronation Pillar (Coronation Pillar STP finished), Kondli, Okhla, and Rithala in Delhi, these projects aim to provide a total treatment capacity of 1268 MLD. By December 2022, these projects should be completed.
