New Delhi: Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind, the largest body of Muslims, is holding a big conference at Deoband on the so-called political-social and religious challenges facing the Muslim community in the country. 5000 Maulanas and Muslim intellectuals belonging to Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind are participating in this conference. The programme is led by eminent Islamic scholar Maulana Mahmood Madani.

It is worth mentioning that Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind is a 100-year-old organization of Muslims. The Jamiat claims to be the largest organisation of Muslims. On its agenda are political-social and religious issues of Muslims. Jamiat Ulama-e-Hind follows the Deobandi ideology of Islam. Deoband was established in the year 1919 by the then Islamic scholars. These included big names like Abdul Bari Firangi Mahali, Kifayatallah Dehlvi, Muhammad Ibrahim Mir Sialkoti and Sanaullah Amritsari.

During the British rule, the Jamiat joined the so-called Khilafat movement step by step with Congress. It is said to have also opposed the partition of the country and advocated for India's united cultural heritage. However, during the partition of the country, due to this stand, there was a partition in the Jamiat and a new organization called Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam was formed which was supporting the formation of Pakistan.
