A woman has been sentenced to 35 years to life in prison for the murder of Michael Latt, a Hollywood advisor and social justice advocate. Jamila Elena Michelle, 27, was found guilty of first-degree murder and first-degree burglary in connection with Latt's death on November 27, 2023.

According to prosecutors, Michelle had been stalking film director Avi Rockwell and threatening him, and she targeted Latt because he was a friend of Rockwell's. On the day of the murder, Michelle knocked on Latt's door, forced her way into his Los Angeles home, and shot him with a semi-automatic handgun. Latt was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Michelle's public defender, Kimberly Wong, read a statement on her client's behalf during the sentencing hearing. "Michelle has taken responsibility for her actions and changed her plea to guilty to do the right thing for all parties involved," Wong said. "At the time of the shooting, she had been homeless on the streets of Los Angeles for nine months and was struggling with multiple traumatic events. She is deeply sorry for the immense pain she has caused and hopes that her change of plea will help everyone heal and move forward."

Latt was a prominent figure in Hollywood, known for his work as a social impact consultant. His company focused on promoting social justice and equality in the film industry. He had worked with several notable directors, including Ava DuVernay and Ryan Coogler, and his death was mourned by the entire Hollywood community.

Just weeks after Latt's death, his mother, Michelle Satter, accepted an Oscar on his behalf for his contributions to the film industry. The award was presented by Coogler, who paid tribute to Latt, calling him "the world's greatest gift." Satter dedicated the award to her son, saying that he had always led with love.

The sentencing of Michelle brings closure to a tragic event that shook the Hollywood community. While the punishment cannot bring back Michael Latt, it serves as a reminder that justice will be served for those who commit heinous crimes.
