Jammu: The government has amended the rules to reserve constituencies for Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and Women in the District Development Council elections. Along with the changes in the Jammu and Kashmir Panchayati Raj policy, seats will now be reserved. The scale of reservation for scheduled castes and tribes will be the highest population of the respective category in the city. The constituency which has the highest number of SCs or STs will be reserved for one term.

In the upcoming elections, the second most concentrated area belonging to this category will be reserved. Similarly, the reservation of seats for women will be done through a three-tier roster. In one, seats will be reserved for open category women, second for Scheduled Caste women and third in Scheduled Tribe women.

Along with this, under another amendment, now candidates contesting elections for any post in the three-tier arrangements of Panchayati Raj will have to take oath under Form 4. Panch, Sarpanch, Panchayati Adalat Chairman, Block Development Council President, District Development Council Member, Zilla Parishad President, Zilla Parishad Vice President will also take the oath. Similarly, the names of the posts have been changed to Chairpersons and Vice-Chairpersons instead of Chairman and Vice-Chairman.
