SRINAGAR: Lieutenant Governor of Jammu &Kashmir Manoj Sinha unveiled a charkha (spinning wheel) at the Srinagar International Airport on Wednesday.
The Jammu & Kashmir Khadi and Village Industries Board installed the Charkha, which measures 8.6 ft x 4.3 ft and weighs 71 kg (KVIB).
Sinha said that Charkha represents Mahatma Gandhi's concept of self-reliance, and that its installation at the Srinagar airport on Republic Day is a fitting tribute to the Father of the Nation and all India's great liberation fighters.
"In 1918, Gandhiji created the Charkha a symbol of economic self-reliance, and it became an integral aspect of the Swadeshi and Indian Independence struggle, such as nonviolence, Satyagraha, and civil disobedience," Sinha added.
Sinha described the event as historic, saying that the Charkha at the Srinagar airport will motivate people to participate more fully in the UT's development framework and address people's needs by maximising the use of social capital and other resources.
