Srinagar: The Jammu-Srinagar National Highway has been closed due to heavy snowfall in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir while eight families have been taken to safer places due to landslides following heavy rains in Gurmul village of Doda district of Jammu and Kashmir. Officials informed on Saturday that a nine-inch layer of snow has been frozen on the land of Jawahar Tunnel on the 270 km long highway and the road has been disrupted due to landslides at several places after rain in Marog, Magerkot and Panthiyal.
Officials have informed that efforts are being made to facilitate the traffic on the strategically important road. The road connects the Kashmir valley with other parts of the country. In Doda district, officials said, landslides took off after heavy rains in Gurmul village of Kastigarh, which sent eight families to safer places. He said the district administration has provided space and relief material to the families to stay.
Officials further said that there has been a landslide in Marog and Nagarkot on national highways while stones are continuously falling from the mountain in Panthiyal. He said that the concerned agencies have engaged personnel and machines in service to clean the strategically important road.
