Tokyo: On Saturday in Abu Dhabi, Japan and the UAE signed a contract to transfer defence technology and equipment. According to the Foreign Ministry in Tokyo, this agreement is the first of its kind with a Middle Eastern nation.
The agreement was signed by Dr. Mubarak Saeed Ghafan Al Jabri, Major General Staff of Assistant Undersecretary for Support and Defence Industries at the United Arab Emirates Ministry of Defence, and Isomata Akio, Ambassador of Japan to the UAE.
The agreement creates a legal framework for the transfer of defence technology and equipment between the two governments for the purposes of fostering security and defence cooperation as well as joint research, development, and production.

The agreement will go into effect once the necessary processes have been completed between the two governments, according to the ministry.

According to the ministry, this agreement ensures proper control over the transfer of defence technology and equipment, particularly with regard to any subsequent transfers to third parties or any additional uses.
According to the ministry, "it is anticipated that this agreement will contribute to closer bilateral defence equipment and technology cooperation and maintain and improve the production and technological foundations for Japan's defence industry, thereby contributing to the security of Japan."
