TOKYO:  Japan  Prime Minister Fumio Kishida's Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) is likely to gain more seats than it now possesses in the next election for the House of Councilors, ensuring victory for Japan's ruling coalition of Komeito and the LDP, as per opinion Poll.

According to a poll done by Nikkei business daily, the LDP is expected to gain approximately 60 seats on its own, up from the current 55 seats it possesses, as per reports.

There are 248 members and a total of 125 seats up for election on July 10. A simple majority of 63 votes is required to win.  The Nikkei poll's findings are at odds with recent public opinion polls, which have indicated waning support for the Kishida-led administration as a result of rising prices and fuel expenses.

The triennial election is a crucial opportunity for the prime minister to gauge public support for the work his administration has done since he entered office about nine months ago.

Voters will mostly judge the Kishida government on how successfully it handled increasing the nation's Covid-19 response and rushing to reduce rising energy and food prices to lessen the burden on households, among other issues.
