Japan: The government of Japan said on Tuesday that it had found the first case of Covid-19's Omicron strain. The infected person is a man in his 30s who arrived from Namibia on Sunday and tested positive for Covid at Narita airport near Tokyo.
According to the media reports, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said on Monday that the government will in principle bar the entry of all foreign nationals and promised to act fast in response to worries over the new Omicron type. The policy went into effect on Tuesday and is expected to endure for approximately a month. It requires citizens and foreigners with residency status to be quarantined for up to 10 days in a government-designated facility after returning from high-risk locations.
South Africa was the first to report the Omicron variant to the World Health Organization (WHO) last week. So far, the variety has been confirmed in various European countries, as well as countries and areas such as Australia, Canada, Israel, and China's Hong Kong. The WHO has designated the strain with a considerable number of mutations as a "variant of concern," warning that it is highly transmissible and poses a higher risk of reinfection for persons who have already been infected with Covid.
