Indian fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah has achieved a major career milestone, joining the prestigious 400-wicket club in international cricket. The pace sensation reached this achievement during India's first Test match against Bangladesh in Chennai. Bumrah's 400th wicket placed him alongside former England all-rounder Andrew Flintoff, who also claimed 400 wickets. However, Bumrah accomplished this feat in just 196 matches, whereas Flintoff needed 227 games.
The list of cricketers with 400 or more international wickets is extensive, featuring 60 players. Topping the list is Sri Lankan legend Muttiah Muralitharan, with an astonishing 1,347 wickets in 495 matches. The late Australian spinner Shane Warne is the only other bowler to have surpassed the 1,000-wicket mark, finishing with 1,001 wickets in 339 matches.
Among Indian cricketers, Anil Kumble holds the record for most international wickets, with 956 dismissals in 403 games.
On September 20, Bumrah showcased his brilliance by leaving Bangladesh reeling at 112-8 by tea on Day 2 of the first Test. Chasing India's total of 376, Bangladesh found themselves trailing by 264 runs. India’s bowling attack was fierce, reducing Bangladesh to 40-5 early in the second session. Akash Deep made an early impact, taking two wickets in consecutive deliveries before lunch.
Bumrah set the tone by dismissing opener Shadman Islam for just 2 runs. Akash Deep followed up by removing Zakir Hasan for 3 and Mominul Haque for a duck on back-to-back deliveries. Although Mushfiqur Rahim managed to survive Deep’s hat-trick ball, he soon fell to Bumrah for 8, giving India a dominant position. Bumrah continued his outstanding performance by picking up his third and fourth wickets in quick succession, including Taskin Ahmed after tea.
Bangladesh was eventually bowled out for 149, failing to avoid the follow-on mark. India has started their second innings, looking to extend their lead.
India’s Batting Woes: Top Order Collapse Earlier in the match, India posted a competitive total thanks to Ravichandran Ashwin's century (113) and a vital 199-run partnership with Ravindra Jadeja. Opener Yashasvi Jaiswal also contributed with a half-century. However, India’s top order, including Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, and Virat Kohli, struggled to make an impact, collapsing under pressure.
