Jasprit Bumrah, India’s ace fast bowler has been ruled out of Champions Trophy 2025 starting from February 19. He is not a part of the revised Champions trophy squad of India. In a big blow to India, Jasprit Bumrah won’t be able to play the big tournament owing to a “lower back injury”. The 2024 ICC player of the year will be replaced by Harshit Rana in the new list released.
Bumrah sustained a back injury in the final test match of the Border Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) against Australia in Sydney last month. He failed to attain complete fitness, with latest scans revealing he is not ready for bowling yet, ahead of Champions trophy. Bumrah is going to miss a big ICC tournament for the second time in the last five years due to an injury. The previous instance was when he missed the 2022 ICC T20 World Cup in Australia.
The BCCI released a statement late night on Tuesday saying, “Fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah has been ruled out of the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy due to a lower back injury. The Men’s selection committee has named Harshit Rana as his replacement.”
Apart from this major replacement, the revised squad also includes the name of Spinner Varun Chakravarthy after his solid impressive performance in the T20 series against England. In the five T20 matches played between India and England, Chakravarthy clinched 14 wickets, where the England batsmen didn’t have an answer to his spin takes. He successfully thrashed the batting order of the visitors. Chakravarthy’s inclusion in the team comes after the second ODI match against England in Cuttack where he picked 1/54.
BCCI further said in its statement, “Team India have also named Varun Chakravarthy in the squad. The spinner will replace Yashasvi Jaiswal, who was initially named in the provisional squad.” Yashasvi Jaiswal is now a part of the non-travelling substitutes along with Mohammad Siraj and Shivam Dube. The three players will only travel to Dubai, as and when required by the team.
Jasprit Bumrah being ruled out from the Champions Trophy is a major setback for India. Bumrah has been named as the ICC player of the year in 2024 owing to his consistent performances in the ODI World Cup, T20 World cup, then in BGT and other matches of the bi-lateral series as well. The Indian team very much relies upon the fast pace bowler and he delivers it very right all the time, with his unique action serving as a weapon. Bumrah is the go to option for the Indian team, emerging as the savior who carries Indian attack on his shoulders every time when needed. Him, not being in the squad can be a worry for India in the big tournament.
Anyways, we still hope for the best from Indian cricket team, who will hit the pitch on 20th February against Bangladesh.
The new revised 15-member India squad for Champions Trophy is:
Rohit Sharma (Captain), Shubhman Gill (Vice-captain), Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul (Wicketkeeper), Rishabh Pant (Wicketkeeper), Hardik Pandya, Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, Kuldeep Yadav, Harshit Rana, Mohammad Shami, Arshdeep Singh, Ravindra Jadeja and Varun Chakravarthy.
