Chennai: The Tamil Nadu government announced that, as was done during the AIADMK regime, the statue of Jayalalithaa would be honoured on behalf of the government during the DMK administration.

In addition, the Department of Higher Education has delegated administrative responsibility for the maintenance of Ms. J. Jayalalithaa's statue on the grounds of the Chennai Higher Education Council to the Director of Public Relations.

She was a successful actress who rose to prominence in the mid-1960s and appeared in around 140 films between 1961 and 1980, mostly in Tamil, Telugu, and Kannada. In 1982, when MG Ramachandran was Tamil Nadu's chief minister, she entered politics and joined AIADMK.

MGR, or MG Ramachandran, was a Tamil cultural star and actor who turned his massive popularity among the people into a successful political career. In most movies, Jayalalithaa was seen as a frequent co-star with MGR.

Jayalalithaa's political career took off quickly, and she became AIADMK propaganda secretary and was elected to the Rajya Sabha in just a few years. Following MGR's death in 1987, Jayalalithaa declared herself his political heir after defeating a faction led by MGR's widow, VN Janaki Ramachandran. After the 1989 assembly election, Jayalalithaa became the AIADMK's sole leader and the opposition's leader, defeating the DMK-led government of M Karunanidhi.
