Asit Modi was casting for Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah at the time. He already knew Dilip Joshi, so he approached him with two characters. Before Jethalal, he was offered the role of Bapuji. When Dilip Joshi heard about this role, he felt that he would not fit in it. Then Asit Modi gave him the role of Jethalal. Dilip Joshi was also in some doubt about this role, but he still decided to give himself an opportunity and said yes to it. The show started in 2008. When the show started, hardly anyone would know that it will one day make history and when no one believed it. Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah, its characters, its cast became so famous in the house that today 14 years have passed since this show, neither Jethalal is unknown to anyone nor Dayaben. This show that brought Dilip Joshi from the floor to Arsh proved to be a show that changed the fortunes in his life.
