ON the day of Dhanteras, shares of gems and jewellery companies were on the combined note while the benchmark indices had been trading with a neutral bias, with Nifty still maintaining above 12680 points.
During noon-session trade, shares of Titan which sells jewellery under the brand Tanishq added up to 2 per cent, Tribhovandas Bhimji Zaveri Limited gained up to 4.5 per cent, while others including Rajesh Exports which is from the diamond cutting and jewellery space was up marginally and Thangamayil Jewellery traded weak by over 1%.
Dhanteras is celebrated on the 13th lunar day of the dark fortnight of the Hindu month of Kartik and the word 'Dhan' means wealth. The festival is considered an auspicious time to buy gold and other valuables such as ornaments and gemstones, apart from metals like copper and silver. The purchases are believed to bring wealth and prosperity.
At 3.10 pm, Sensex rose by 90 points to trade at 43,458 levels while Nifty up by 29 points at 12,723 levels on the National Stock Exchange.
