Ranchi: In the case of killing five people belonging to the same family in the name of a witch in Gumla, Jharkhand, the Ranchi High Court has taken strict note on the state government, taking suo motu cognizance. On Thursday, Chief Justice Ravi Ranjan said that the government should now wake up from a deep sleep. The awareness campaign is not going on properly in the state against witchcraft.
The High Court has directed the Chief Secretary, Home Secretary, DGP, and Social Welfare Secretary to file replies. Along with this, they have asked them that till now in the matter of awareness and what kind of action has been taken in this matter so far. The next hearing of this case will be held on 18 March. Chief Justice Ravi Ranjan has also directed a team of Jhalsa to investigate the case. This team will go to the spot in Gumla to investigate the matter and present the report in the High Court.
The entire family of Nikodin Topno was murdered on the night of 22 February in the village of Burhatu of Kamdara police station of Gumla on the basis of suspicion of witch-hunter. On the charge of murder, Gumla police arrested 8 accused Sunil Topno, Soma Topno, Salim Topno, Firangi Topno, Philip Topno, Amrit Topno, Savan Topano, and Daniel Topno from the village itself.
