Gujarat: Independent MLA burns copy of Statue of Unity Bill outside the assembly

AHMEDABAD: Jignesh Mevani, an independent MLA from Gujarat recently, expressed his opposition by burning the bill brought in relation to the Statue of Unity outside the Assembly on Tuesday. Mewani has opposed the bill in support of the tribals. Mevani was suspended from the House on the very first day of the session.

During the discussion on Constitution Day on the first day of the three-day session of the Gujarat Legislative Assembly, Chief Minister Vijay Rupani was telling the House that on 26 November 2019, the State Government celebrated Constitution Day with joy and gaiety. Meanwhile, MLA Mevani accused the government of doing anti-constitutional work and said that incidents of atrocities against Dalits are happening in the state, but the government is not serious. Mevani said that in the past, the constitution tour was taken out by the state government in Surendranagar by placing the book of the Constitution on the elephant, but Dalit youths were shot in Thangadh of Surendranagar. The government is still not serious about bringing justice to those affected families.

On the other hand, sources said that on Tuesday, they protested by burning the bill brought in the assembly in this regard in support of the tribals opposing the Statue of Unity Development Bill. The state government brought a bill to develop the Statue of Unity and attract more and more tourists and introduced a bill for its administration, which was burnt by independent MLA Mevani as anti-tribal.
