Dalit leader and Gujarat newly-elected MLA Jignesh Mewani has stoutly rebutted allegations that he addressed a provocative speech.

MLA Mevani even raised the question that why Prime Minister Narendra Modi was hushed over Bhima- Koregaon- clashes.

The Pune police have filed a case against Mewani and JNU student leader Umar Khalid imposed charges on them of making “inflammatory speeches" at a gathering in Pune's  Shaniwarwada on December 31.

"PM should speak on the rising number of incidents against Dalits, from Vemula suicide to Una in Gujarat to Saharanpur in UP and now Bhima Koregaon. Why are these attacks happening only in BJP-ruled states?" Mevani fired questions at PM.

"The PM should clarify whether Dalits of this country have a right to the peaceful demonstration or not, why is he not reacting to these atrocities," Mewani further asked.

Talking the media at the Press Club of India, Delhi, Mevani said that neither did he visit Bhima Koregaon nor give an inflammatory speech.

Targeting the BJP and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Dalit leader said that the ruling party was trying to cover its loss of face in the Gujarat Assembly elections by tarnishing his image.

"We want a casteless society. We are looking for water on the moon but at the same time caste fault lines continue to exist. I am being targeted...I am an elected representative...BJP is doing same to avenge its loss in Gujarat," he said

Mewani warned Modi that if this oppression of Dalits kept continues then the 2019 parliamentary polls would have far from positive aftermath for  Modi and his saffron party.

Mevani informed that a Yuva Hunkar Rally will be carried out in Delhi on Tuesday, January 9 after which he'll protest to the Prime Minister's office with a Manusmriti in one hand and the Constitution in the other, inviting the PM to decide one or the other.
