New Delhi: India's fast runner and Asian Games gold medal winner Jinson Johnson has qualified for the World Championship. He won the silver medal in the 1500 meters in the ISTAF Berlin competition and also broke his national record in the 1500 meters. Johnson finished second behind Joshua Thompson of the US with a time of three minutes 35.24 seconds at the Olympic Stadium.
Johnson improved to his own national record of 3.37.62 seconds, which the Kerala runner scored in Nijmegen, Netherlands in June. He also holds a national record of 800 meters (1.45.65 seconds) to his name. With this performance, he also qualified for the World Championship in Doha from 28 September to 6 October.
The qualifying time of the World Championship was three minutes 36.00 seconds. Jinson said after the competition, 'I was hoping to set a new national record but I did not expect to win a silver medal. I will now go to Colorado in the US for further training and then participate in the World Championship in Doha. Johnson said that I am very happy but my goal is to do well in Tokyo 2020. He won the gold medal in the 1500m Asian Games in 2018 with 3: 44.72 minutes.
