After successfully operating on a 60-year-old woman last week, JJ Hospital's surgery department achieved a rare feat of being the first hospital in the city to perform scarless endoscopic thyroid surgery.

The thyroid gland via lower part of the woman's lips has been approached by the team of doctors without leaving any scar.

Dr Ajay Bhandarwar, professor, department of surgery, JJ Hospital, said, "Thyroid gland enlargement is more common in women and that too in younger age. Therefore the conventional method of opening up the neck region to remove the diseased gland leaves behind scar which is unacceptable by many".

Dr Amol Wagh, general surgeon and team member who operated on this Aurangabad woman, said, "The recovery period is long as the wound is in the neck and it becomes difficult for the patient to move her neck. There is blood loss too. In Sugandha Kurunde's case, we gave anaesthesia via nasal route".

According to the doctors, this is the first scarless endoscopic thyroirectomy. And further they would like to do a series of them before beginning to operate of bigger thyroid tumours in future.

"Presently, not every thyroid gland enlargement case can be operated via this procedure. If the thyroid size is less than 5 cm, we can go for it. Pradnya had 3.5 cm long thyroid," added Gandhi.
