New Delhi: During the Supreme Court hearing on the bail plea of Umar Khalid, an accused in the anti-Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) protests, the SSP told the court that there have been WhatsApp chats between Umar Khalid and others, which show that he was preparing pamphlets distributed in Jafrabad. Along with this, these were distributed to the imams of various mosques to read in the khutba during the prayers.

The SSP told the court that former JNU students Sharjeel Imam and Umar Khalid were also in touch. Asif Tanha, Saiful and others were also in touch. All these people were present at the protest site in Shaheen Bagh, were also roaming around in Old Delhi and other areas. He told that these people were planning on WhatsApp to coordinate the protests and oppose the police action. The SSP further said that this man claims that he is from JNU, and he claims that he was in Shaheen Bagh, but was out of the protests? But the message of January 13 shows that he is saying that if you need any help in Khureji, then I have contacts.

On February 24, 2020, communal violence broke out in northeast Delhi following violence between supporters and protesters of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and at least 53 people lost their lives and nearly 700 people were injured.
