UNITED STATES: Following a leaked draught revealed the Supreme Court was prepared to overturn the long-standing judgment upholding a woman's right to terminate a pregnancy,  US President Joe Biden called on American voters on Tuesday to defend the "fundamental" right to abortion.

The conservative majority's decision came as a thunderclap late Monday in Washington, setting the stage for a potentially historic turning point on a contentious subject that will undoubtedly dominate the November midterm elections.

If the proposal becomes law, which might happen in the coming months,  it will rip out half a century of constitutional protections for abortion rights, giving free rein to Republican-controlled states that are already pushing hard to restrict the procedure.

The Democrats are united in their support for abortion rights, and they rallied instantly to defend the landmark Roe v. Wade decision of 1973.  While he stressed that the draught had not been validated,  Biden said that if the Supreme Court went ahead, the American people would have to stand up and defend the right.

"I believe that a woman's right to choose is important; Roe has been the law of the land for almost fifty years, and basic fairness and the stability of our law demand that it not be reversed," he said.
