Johnny Depp was born in Owensboro, Kentucky, the son of Betty Sue Palmer, a waiter and civil engineer John Christopher Depp Sr. He has a brother, Daniel, who is a novelist and has two sisters, Christie and Debbie. According to a recent autobiography, the Depp family in America began with the French Huguenot immigrant Peer Depe or Dieppe, who settled in Virginia around 1700, which was part of the refugee colony near the James River.

In Depp's childhood, his family moved to many places, he and his siblings lived in more than twenty places, finally settling in Miramar, Florida in the 1970s. Depp's parents divorced in 1978. In childhood, he started harming himself due to stress in dealing with family problems. There are seven or eight marks on his body. In an interview in 1993, he described these self-inflicted injuries as, "In a way, my body is a magazine. It's just like sailors, each of whose tattoos have a meaning, At a specified time make a mark on your body, whether make it yourself with a knife or get it done by a professional tattoo artist."

In 1987, Depp played the main character in the Fox TV television series 21 Jump Street. Depp accepted this role to work with Frederick Forest, the one who inspired Depp. Depp's old friends joined the series with a character named San Genco Blowfish. The success of this series made Depp a teen idol in the late 1980s. He used to think that he was "being forced to play a particular product". Depp decided that he would only work in films that he felt are right for him.
