Comedian Kunal Kamra gives statement on contempt notice

Famous comedian Kunal Kamra has refused to apologize in response to the Supreme Court's contempt notice for his tweets against the judiciary. Kamra has stated in his affidavit that jokes are not reality and he does not claim to be so. His lawyer has argued in the court that no defence is needed for jokes, and this is based on the actor's belief.

In his affidavit submitted to the Supreme Court, Kamra said, "My tweet is not intended to undermine public confidence in the judiciary. So, if the Supreme Court believes that I have crossed a line and wants to shut down my internet indefinitely, then like my Kashmiri friends, I will write a Happy Independence Day postcard every August 15". He further said, "It is irrational and undemocratic to consider any institution of power in a democracy as beyond criticism."

Kamra has said that the court is looking at a case of assault on freedom of speech and expression on the one hand and comedians like Munawar Farooqui, on the other hand, have been jailed for jokes which they have not even made. In the affidavit, he said, "I do not agree with many decisions of the courts but I promise this bench that I will respect any decision with a wide smile and will not ignore this bench or SC in this case because in reality there will be contempt of court.
