JERUSALEM: During their meeting in Amman on Tuesday, Jordanian King Abdullah II and Israeli Defense Minister Benny Gantz discussed "regional security challenges," according to a statement released by Israel's Defense Ministry. The discussion at the king's palace focused on ways to protect freedom of worship, security coordination, and strengthening Palestinian livelihoods.

During the impending Muslim holy month of Ramadan, Gantz emphasised the need of sustaining regional stability as well as the fight against terrorism.  Jordan's deputy prime minister and foreign minister, Ayman Safadi, was also present for the meeting. Safadi met with Israel's Public Security Minister, Omer Bar-Lev, in Amman last week to address the region's growing tensions.

The meeting on Tuesday followed a two-day summit in southern Israel, when foreign ministers from four Arab countries, Israel, and the United States discussed regional security and cooperation. The Jordanian king visited Ramallah in the occupied West Bank on Monday to express solidarity with Palestinians who were unable to attend the summit in Israel.

Two incidents have occurred in Israel in the last week, the most recent of which being a shooting in northern Israel on Sunday that killed two Israeli police officers. The Islamic State has claimed responsibility for the attack that occurred on Sunday.
