Amman:  During a meeting with the prime minister of Israel on Tuesday, Jordan's King Abdullah II emphasised the significance of upholding the historical and legal status quo in the Al-Aqsa Mosque complex.

According to a statement from the royal court, the king emphasised the importance of remaining calm and ending all acts of violence "to pave the way for a political horizon for the peace process."

He also urged an end to any actions that might jeopardise chances for peace.

King Abdullah welcomed Benjamin Netanyahu to Jordan and reiterated Jordan's unwavering support for the two-state solution, which ensures the establishment of a sovereign Palestinian state along the lines of 1967 with East Jerusalem as its capital.

Itamar Ben-Gvir, Israel's far-right national security minister, enraged the Palestinians and drew widespread international condemnation when he paid a visit to the Al-Aqsa mosque compound in Jerusalem on January 3.

Almost every nation in the world, according to Mansour, believes that the international community should be the one to decide the future of the two-state solution. "The fate of defending and safeguarding the historical status quo in Jerusalem in defence of the Islamic and Christian sites in Jerusalem is decided by the international community."

Arab countries and various other UN organisations have urged the Security Council to denounce the "provocative" visit of newly appointed Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir to the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound in East Jerusalem on Tuesday at a proposed emergency meeting on Thursday.
